September 11, 2015 —Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota and California have been linked to separate outbreaks of food poisoning and the first lawsuit has been filed, Law360 reports.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in California by two women who developed severe gastrointestinal illnesses after eating at a Chipotle location in Simi Valley.
Health officials said at least 98 customers and 17 employees were infected with Norovirus on August 18 and 19. The restaurant was briefly closed and inspectors observed serious sanitary issues — unclean bathrooms, dirty utensils, flying insects, equipment connected directly to the sewer, and a lack of valid food handler cards.
One of the plaintiffs experienced full body-aches, muscle spasms, stomach pain, joint pain, and diarrhea. Symptoms were so severe she had to visit the emergency room for further treatment. The other plaintiff developed severe nausea, vomiting, explosive diarrhea, chest pain, and dehydration. She visited a doctor and tested positive for Norovirus.
45 Sick in Chipotle Salmonella Outbreak in Minnesota
Meanwhile, Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota have been blamed for an outbreak of Salmonella that has infected 45 people and sent five to the hospital, according to the Star-Tribune.
Health officials believe the outbreak occurred from August 16-26. They did not confirm what caused the outbreak, but said the ingredient has been removed from the restaurants.
