Lidl Cocktail Shrimp Recalled for Listeria Risk
In March 2023, Lidl US recalled fully-cooked ready-to-eat Tapas® Cocktail Shrimp by Lidl (7-oz. trays) due to a risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were reported as of March 3, but infections with Listeria can be serious and even fatal — especially for young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women may also suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth.
How To Identify Recalled Shrimp
The recall includes all units of ready-to-eat Tapas® Cocktail Shrimp by Lidl, packaged in 7-oz. trays with a UPC of 4056489411499. All product codes currently on the market are being recalled.
The recalled product was distributed to all Lidl US store locations, which includes about 12,000 stores in the states of Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.
What Happened?
The recall was issued after a routine test on a finished Tapas® Cocktail Shrimp product was positive for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Lidl has stopped the production and distribution of this product as they investigate the source of the problem and work to resolve it.
Signs & Symptoms of Listeria Infection
Unlike many bacteria, Listeria can survive in a freezer and grow at refrigeration temperatures. People who eat food that is contaminated with Listeria can develop symptoms as soon as the same day, but it can take up to 70 days for symptoms to appear.
The warning signs and complications of a Listeria infection include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Stiffness
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Convulsions
- Meningitis
- Blood infection (sepsis)
- Death
