Lotrimin Recalled for Toxic Benzene

In October 2021, Bayer recalled certain Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal Athlete’s Foot Spray products due to benzene, a toxic cancer-causing chemical.

What is the Risk?

People can be exposed to benzene if it is absorbed through the skin, breathed, or swallowed. “Depending on duration and level of exposure, it can result in cancers including leukemia, and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening,” according to the recall.

What is the Problem?

Benzene is not added as an ingredient to Lotrimin, but it is classified as a human carcinogen (chemical that is believed to cause cancer in humans) by the American Cancer Society. According to Bayer, the levels of benzene detected “are not expected to cause adverse health consequences in consumers.”

What Products Were Recalled?

Bayer recalled all unexpired Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal (AF) and Tinactin® spray products with lot numbers beginning with TN, CV or NAA, distributed between September 2018 to September 2021, including:

  • Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal (AF) Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
  • Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal Jock Itch (AFJI) Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
  • Lotrimin® Anti-Fungal (AF) Athlete’s Foot Deodorant Powder Spray

  • Tinactin® Jock Itch (JI) Powder Spray
  • Tinactin® Athlete’s Foot Deodorant Powder Spray
  • Tinactin® Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
  • Tinactin® Athlete’s Foot Liquid Spray

Benzene in Spray Sunscreen Products

Beginning in mid-2021, a growing number of recalls have been issued for spray sunscreens that were contaminated with benzene. These recalls include products from Johnson & Johnson, CVS, and Coppertone, although dozens of other products have tested positive for benzene contamination, according to the independent lab Valisure.
