UPDATE: 20 More Victims File Sexual Assault Lawsuit Against Lyft
Is Your Lyft Driver a Sex Predator?
Dozens of women who were sexually assaulted by Lyft drivers have filed lawsuits accusing Lyft of hiding a “sexual predator crisis.”
Their lawyers claim that “many thousands” of people have been assaulted in Lyft vehicles, including passengers who were raped by Lyft drivers, as well as drivers who were assaulted by passengers.
Yet instead of taking a few simple steps to prevent sexual assaults and rapes — such as installing cameras in vehicles — Lyft is accused of ignoring complaints and hiding the staggering number of assaults.
Lyft has a “history of hiring sexual predators who have assaulted Lyft passengers,” according to the lawsuit. Even so, “Lyft does nothing to warn its female passengers about this very serious and real danger.”
Lyft has also been aware that drivers were sexually assaulting female riders since at least 2015, but continues to hire drivers based on minimal name-based background checks, rather than fingerprints.
Sexual Predators May Still Be Driving for Lyft
Lyft allows sexual predators to continue driving after being accused of rape and sexual assault, according to lawsuits. Furthermore, Lyft is accused of ignoring complaints, silencing accusers by deactivating their accounts, and deleting complaints against predatory drivers.
Lyft Sex Assault Lawsuit Filed by 19 Women
In December 2019, a Lyft sexual assault lawsuit was filed in California by 19 women who claim they were raped or assaulted by their Lyft drivers. Several drivers were arrested and convicted of sex crimes described in the lawsuit, but other accused drivers may still be driving for Lyft.
Another Lyft Sex Assault Lawsuit Filed by 7 Women
The same law firm filed another lawsuit in August 2019 on behalf of 7 women who were raped or sexually assaulted by a Lyft driver. One woman said she was “raped and sodomized” by her driver. Another woman said her Lyft driver followed her home and raped her.
Can I Join a Class Action?
Dozens of women have filed lawsuits against Lyft, but the cases are not part of a class action. Instead, they are individual lawsuits. These women want Lyft to improve safety by enhancing background checks, responding to complaints, and removing predatory drivers. Many victims are also seeking financial compensation for pain and suffering, trauma, medical expenses, and more.
