1.5 Million Medline Bed Rails Recalled After 2 Deaths

In May 2024, Medline Industries recalled 1.5 million Adult Portable Bed Rails after two deaths were reported.

What is the Problem?

The recalled bed rails pose “a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation,” according to the recall. When the recalled bed rails are attached to an adult’s bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress.

What is the Risk?

  • Entrapment
  • Asphyxiation
  • Suffocation
  • Lack of oxygen (brain damage)
  • Death

What Happened?

Medline said it received 2 reports of entrapment deaths associated with the Bed Assist Bars. The first death occurred in July 2019 and involved a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa. The second death occurred in November 2023 and involved an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina.

How To Identify Recalled Medline Bed Rails

The recalled bed rails have model numbers MDS6800BA (sold individually) or MDS6800BAH (sold in cases of three units).

The bed rails are made of black metal tubing with a rounded black foam rubber grip handle and a fabric pouch. The name “Medline” and the model number are printed on a label located on the support frame.

Where Were They Sold?

The bed rails were sold by Medline Industries between July 2009 and March 2024 for between $32 and $64.

They were sold by medical supply stores nationwide, including Cascade Healthcare Solutions and Magic Medical, as well as Medline’s websites and online retailers, such as Amazon, Walmart.com, online pharmacies, and more.

Medline also recalled 5,522 bed rails that were sold in Canada, according to Health Canada. No deaths were reported in Canada.
