The Vive Health Bed Rail Recall

On March 26, 2026, safety officials announced a recall of approximately 122,000 Vive Health adult portable bed rails due to a serious entrapment hazard. When attached to a bed, users can become trapped within the rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress, posing a risk of death by asphyxiation.

Vive Health has received 2 confirmed reports of entrapment deaths linked to one of the recalled models. Both deaths occurred in September 2024. One victim was a 97-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Texas. The other was a 93-year-old man at his home in Florida.

The recalled bed rails also violate the mandatory federal safety standard for adult portable bed rails and were sold without required hazard warning labels.

Which Products Are Recalled?

The recall covers three models of Vive Health adult portable bed rails:

  • Vive Health Compact Bed Rail
  • Bed Rail Collection V
  • Model LVA1024 (units purchased on or before August 21, 2023)
  • Model LVA3031BLK

The recalled bed rails were sold at medical supply stores nationwide and through Vive Health’s website, Amazon.com, and other online retailers from September 2019 through December 2025, at prices between $45 and $90.

If you own one of these products, the CPSC is urging consumers to stop using the recalled bed rails immediately and contact Vive Health for a full refund.

The Hidden Danger of Adult Portable Bed Rails

Adult portable bed rails are widely used by elderly adults and people with limited mobility to help them get in and out of bed safely. They attach to the side of a standard bed frame and are often purchased by or for seniors living at home or in assisted living facilities.

The danger with the recalled Vive Health models is that a user can slip into the gap between the rail and the mattress and become trapped. Once entrapped, they may be unable to free themselves. This can lead to positional asphyxiation, which can be fatal, especially for elderly or frail individuals who cannot call for help.

This type of entrapment hazard has been the subject of numerous bed rail recalls over many years. The Vive Health recall is now among the largest in recent memory for this product category.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Elderly adults and people with limited mobility are most at risk from this type of entrapment hazard. The two confirmed deaths in this recall both involved men in their 90s. One death occurred at a licensed assisted living facility, which raises additional questions about the duty of care owed by the facility.

Family members who purchased bed rails for aging parents or grandparents, as well as caregivers and assisted living operators, may have been relying on these products in good faith, not knowing they were defective and non-compliant with mandatory safety standards.

This Is the Latest in a Long Pattern of Bed Rail Recalls

The Vive Health recall is the latest in a long and troubling pattern of adult portable bed rail recalls involving entrapment deaths. The Schmidt Firm has been tracking and accepting cases arising from bed rail entrapment for years.

  • April 2024: Essential Medical Supply re-announced a recall of about 272,000 Endurance Bed Rails after 3 deaths
  • December 2021: Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare recalled nearly 500,000 bed rails after 2 deaths
