Midwest Folding Products Stage and Riser Caddy Recall

Midwest Folding Products Stage and Riser Caddy Recall

September 20, 2012 — The Chicago, Illinois company Midwest Folding Products and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) are recalling approximately 5,300 stage and riser caddies. The products are designed without an automatic locking mechanism, and there is a risk that an unsecured stage or riser that is stored on the caddy could fall and injure a person. Young children may be especially prone to injury from heavy platforms.

In May 2011, a 3 year-old girl died at a church in Greenville, South Carolina. She died of severe head trauma when a portion of a stage fell on her. The stage was stored on an unsecured caddy.

Midwest Folding Products is recalling the caddies and offering repair kits for their customers which will add an automatic latching mechanism. The recalled caddies are made of metal and painted black, brown, or gray. They are 44-inches long, 30-inches wide, and 60-inches high. The caddies were sold for $1,200, from 1989 until March 2012, mostly to public organizations all over the United States — including churches, schools, performing arts centers, and more.

Midwest Folding Products is currently attempting to notify known customers. However, anyone who is involved with an organization that uses a stage or rise caddy should check to see whether their product is part of the recall.

The CPSC and the company are also recommending that customers who currently own the products should not use them until the product can be repaired. Customers can contact Midwest Folding Products for a free repair kit, which will install an automatic latch, warning stickers, and instructions on how to use the product safely.
