FDA Evaluating Rhabdomyolysis Risk

The FDA is evaluating a potential signals of a serious risk and new safety information linking DPP4 diabetes drugs and rhabdomyolysis. This potentially life-threatening kidney side effect was identified by the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) between April and June 2017.

Nesina and Pancreatic Cancer

Nesina (alogliptin) is a diabetes drug in the incretin mimetic class. Drugs in this class help people with diabetes control their blood-sugar levels by forcing the pancreas to make more insulin. Not surprisingly, many experts are concerned about pancreatic side effects, such as:

  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Hemorrhagic pancreatitis
  • Necrotizing pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Pre-cancerous growths (pancreatic duct metaplasia)

FDA Issues Warning and Investigates Studies

In March 2013, the FDA issued a warning for patients on Nesina. They opened an investigation into a study linking it to pre-cancerous growths called pancreatic duct metaplasia. The FDA also cited a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine linking incretin mimetic drugs with a doubled increased risk of pancreatitis.

Because pancreatitis is a risk-factor for pancreatic cancer, many experts are concerned about the long-term risks of Nesina. In 2010, a study published in Gastroenterology found higher rates of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer among patients on incretin mimetic drugs.

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer occurs when cells grow uncontrollably and form a mass called a tumor inside the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ located deep inside the abdomen that produces digestive juices and hormones like insulin to regulate blood-sugar levels.

Mild Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer May Delay Diagnosis

The problem with pancreatic cancer is that it does not usually cause any symptoms in its early stages, which delays diagnosis until the cancer is hard to treat or incurable. Early symptoms are often vague and mild, and they may include:

  • Pain (dull backache, upper-abdominal discomfort)
  • Weight-loss, lack of appetite
  • Indigestion, bloating, or diarrhea (especially after eating greasy food)
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blocked bile ducts may cause dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools, or itching
  • And more

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our attorneys are not pursuing justice for our clients through a Nesina class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits and only accepting cases involving severe pancreatic side effects of Nesina.

About Class Actions

Class actions are a good way for a lot of people to collectively seek compensation for similar legal claims. Everyone is represented by one plaintiff, and the outcome depends on that person’s case. If compensation is awarded by a lawsuit verdict or settlement, everyone shares equally.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Class actions improve efficiency by helping a lot of people all at once, but they are not designed to maximize compensation for individuals with the most severe injuries. People who join class actions may have to accept high attorneys’ fees or a “low-ball” settlement that leaves little for everyone to share.

Instead of a class action, our law firm files individual lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies that sell unsafe medications. We focus our efforts on helping people with serious injuries recover compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, long-term injuries, and more.
