Multiple Infant Deaths Linked to Weighted Baby Products
In April 2024, CPSC Commissioner Rich Trumka Jr. issued a Statement on Weighted Infant Blankets to parents: “Don’t use weighted blankets or weighted swaddles.” He said there were “multiple infant deaths in these products.”
According to Dr. Rachel Moon, a pediatrician and SIDS expert:
“When babies are first born, their rib cage is not rigid, and so it doesn’t take a lot of pressure to press on it and create obstruction there. It makes it harder for them to breathe, it makes it harder for their heart to beat properly if there’s pressure on there.”
What is the Risk?
Weighted sleep sacks and swaddles put pressure on a baby’s chest, which can make it harder for infants to breathe or get themselves out of unsafe sleeping positions. The safety hazards include:
- Suffocation
- Low oxygen
- Heart problems
- Brain damage
- SIDS
- Death
Nested Bean Class Action Lawsuit
In May 2024, a proposed class action lawsuit was filed against Nested Bean by parents who were said their baby struggled to breathe while using the weighted baby sleep sack.
According to the lawsuit, Nested Bean “touts their products as ‘scientifically designed for self-soothing and sounder sleep.'” Instead, lawyers claim that he product is “inherently dangerous” and defective.
The Nested Bean Lawsuit was filed on May 15, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts — Case Number 1:24-cv-11299.
Amazon, Target Stop Selling Nested Bean Weighted Baby Sleep Sacks
In April 2024, major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Nordstrom and Babylist announced that they would all stop selling weighted infant products in the interest of safety.
Lawmakers Call for Investigation Into Nested Bean and Dreamland Baby Advertising
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission, urging the FTC to investigate the “deceptive advertising practices” by manufacturers of weighted baby sleep sacks and swaddles, including Nested Bean and Dreamland Baby. He was concerned about “misleading claims your company has made to attract vulnerable and unsuspecting parents and caregivers.”
AAP Believes Weighted Swaddles Unsafe for Infants
In June 2023, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also wrote a letter to federal regulators, warning: “The AAP believes these weighted swaddles and related products are unsafe for infants and does not recommend these products.”
Weighted Baby Products Pose Risk of Low Oxygen, Brain Damage, SIDS
The American Academy of Pediatrics warned that weighted infant sleep products are “associated with concerning reductions in oxygen saturation levels in infants.” The experts also warned a possible “risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), so a product that decreases arousal may increase the risk of SIDS.”
There is also a risk of brain damage, according to the warning: “This means there is evidence that the use of weight sleep products on infants can lead to lower oxygen levels, which if sustained, may be harmful to the developing infant’s brain.”
