Nick’s Famous Bar-B-Q Recalls Smoked Pork for Listeria Risk
In October 2021, Nick’s Famous Bar-B-Q, of Nashville, Tennessee, recalled around 3,140 pounds of ready-to-eat smoked pork barbecue products due to a risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses were reported. Instead, the problem was discovered after a review of the company’s production records by the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).
What Products Were Recalled?
The recall involves frozen ready-to-eat (fully cooked) hickory smoked pork barbecue products, specifically:
- 20-lb. boxes of “Nick’s FAMOUS Hickory Smoked Pork Bar-B-Q” with a case code of 23452 and a use by date of 09/2022
Pork Distributed to Schools in North Carolina
The pork products were distributed in North Carolina to institutions, including schools, but not as part of the USDA National School Lunch Program. Health officials are concerned that some of the recalled products may still be in institutions’ freezers.
Risks of Listeria Food Poisoning
Eating food that is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause listeriosis, a serious type of food poisoning. The symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea. Pregnant women may suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth.
