What is Obturator Neuralgia?
Obturator neuralgia (also known as “obturator neuropathy”) is a condition that causes pain in the groin, inner thigh, or vaginal area. It has been linked to mesh implants, surgery, traumatic injuries, pelvic fractures, and occasionally childbirth.
Mesh Implants Linked to Obturator Neuralgia
Here are some examples of how obturator neuralgia may be linked to mesh implants:
- Direct injury to the obturator nerve during surgery to implant mesh
- Mesh erodes through nearby tissue into the obturator nerve
- Inflammation or scar-tissue grows around the implant and causes “nerve entrapment”
Signs & Symptoms of Obturator Nerve Pain
One or more symptom can indicate a nerve injury:
- Groin pain
- Hip pain
- Pain with sitting
- Tailbone pain
- Anorectal pain
- Burning/stabbing pain
- Labia majora pain/burning
- Clitoral pain or numbness
- Severe pain that makes vaginal penetration impossible
- Inability to wear tight pants
- Painful bladder/Painful bladder filling
Obturator Neuralgia and Mesh Implants
Obturator neuralgia has been linked to certain types of mesh implants — particularly Trans-Obturator (TOT) sling implants that were designed so that surgeons had to blindly pass a needle through the patient’s retropubic space to implant the sling. Even a tiny mistake during the procedure could leave the patient suffering from permanent nerve pain in the groin, sexual dysfunction, and other side effects.
What is Obturator Nerve Entrapment?
Obturator neuralgia can be caused by entrapment of the obturator nerve. This can occur when mesh implants press against the nerve itself. Mesh implants may also cause inflammation or the overgrowth of scar-tissue. Surgical mistakes during implantation of the mesh are also linked to obturator neuralgia, nerve entrapment, and chronic pain.
