FDA Evaluating Rhabdomyolysis Risk

The FDA is evaluating a potential signals of a serious risk and new safety information linking DPP4 diabetes drugs and rhabdomyolysis. This potentially life-threatening kidney side effect was identified by the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) between April and June 2017.

What is Onglyza?

AstraZeneca’s Onglyza (saxagliptin) belongs to a new class of type-2 diabetes medications that control blood-sugar levels by increasing the amount of insulin made by the pancreas.

Onglyza and Pancreatic Cancer

Onglyza is a type of drug known as an incretin mimetic, which mimic hormones that cause the growth of cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Unfortunately, this may increase the risk of pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation) and pancreatic cancer.

A study published in Diabetes in March 2013 appeared to show that long-term use of incretin mimetics could lead to pre-cancerous growths in the pancreas. The FDA opened a Safety Investigation soon after the study was published.

Onglyza and Heart Failure

Onglyza was linked to a 27% increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure in the SAVOR clinical trial, published by the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2014. About a year later, the FDA approved label updates on Onglyza to warn patients about this risk.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not pursuing justice for our clients through a Onglyza class action.

Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits against AstraZeneca on behalf of people who developed severe, life-threatening side effects after taking Onglyza. We are evaluating cases involving:

  • Pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation)
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Heart failure
  • Death

About Class Actions

The problem with class actions is that people with very serious injures are lumped in together with people who are not as seriously injured. Even if members are awarded compensation, everyone typically divides the payout equally — after lawyers take a cut. The result is often a “low-ball” settlement with high attorneys’ fees.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Instead of a class action, our law firm is filing individual lawsuits against AstraZeneca. At this time, we are only accepting cases involving very serious injuries caused by Onglyza.

We specialize in helping victims of defective drugs file lawsuits against drug-makers who sell dangerous medications, fail to warn about side effects, and put corporate profits above public safety.

If you decide to file a lawsuit, we can help you maximize financial compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, permanent disability, lost income, decreased quality of life, and more.
