October 16, 2015 — Two more seafood canneries in Oregon have issued recalls for tuna and salmon products made by Skipanon Seafood that may be under-processed and could pose a risk of botulism.
There have been no reports of illness associated with the recalls. Both companies sold products that were made by Skipanon Brand Seafood LLC. The recalls were initiated after the FDA became concerned that the products might be under-processed or cause botulism.
Ecola Seafoods Recalls All Canned Salmon and Tuna
Ecola Seafoods Inc. of Cannon Beach, Oregon has recalled all canned salmon and tuna with codes beginning with “OC.” These products include:
- Albacore tuna
- Smoked albacore tuna
- Coho salmon
- Smoked Coho salmon
- Chinook salmon
- Smoked Chinook salmon
Garibaldi Cannery Recall
The Garibaldi Cannery LLC of Garibaldi, Oregon has also recalled all cans with codes starting with “OC.” These products include:
- Albacore tuna
- Albacore tuna bellies
- Jalapeno albacore tuna
- Smoked albacore tuna
- Garlic albacore tuna
- Pacific salmon
- Smoked pacific salmon
- Silver salmon
- Chinook salmon
Warning Signs & Symptoms
Botulism is a life-threatening paralytic illness that is caused by Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that secretes a powerful nerve toxin. According to the FDA, symptoms of botulism may include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distention, and constipation.
