Peeled Garlic Recalled After Botulism Risk Discovered

In April 2026, Tops Friendly Markets recalled all codes of Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic and Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum. The issue was discovered during a routine store inspection that found the products had not been held at sufficient temperatures to control the botulism hazard.

The recall was issued with the knowledge of the FDA. No illnesses have been reported as of the recall announcement date. Consumers are warned not to eat the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled — botulism contamination is not always detectable by sight or smell.

What Products Are Recalled?

  • Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic — 6 oz., plastic bag, UPC 74574-10852, all product code dates
  • Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic — 6 oz., plastic bag, UPCs 71894-00000 and 68826-75340, all product code dates

Both products were distributed through Tops Markets locations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

What Is the Botulism Risk?

Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that produces a toxin causing botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. According to the recall announcement, symptoms may include:

  • General weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Double vision
  • Trouble speaking or swallowing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Weakness of other muscles
  • Abdominal distension
  • Constipation

The recall announcement states that Clostridium botulinum “can cause life threatening illness or death.” Botulism is a medical emergency — the toxin can be present in food that looks and smells completely normal.

What Should I Do?

Customers who purchased either recalled product should return it to any Tops Markets location for a full refund. Do not eat the product. For questions, Tops Consumer Affairs can be reached at 1-800-522-2522. For more information, visit the FDA recall page.
