June 25, 2018 — At least 200 women have joined lawsuits accusing USC gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall of sexual abuse during exams at the USC Student Health Center.
If successful, the lawsuit could cost USC hundreds of millions of dollars. At least 120 women from USC have contacted John Manley, a lawyer who achieved a $500 million settlement for sex abuse victims of Larry Nassar at the University of Michigan, with the average victim receiving $1.3 million.
Tyndall is accused of sexual harassment and sexually abusing his patients by inserting his ungloved fingers into their vaginas and anuses, watching patients undress, forcing them to lie completely naked on the exam for head-to-toe “mole” inspections, taking inappropriate pictures of their genitals, commenting on the tightness of their vaginas, making racist remarks during exams, and more.
In interviews with the Los Angeles Times, Tyndall said his examinations were extremely thorough, but always appropriate.
After a frustrated nurse finally reported Tyndall to the campus rape crisis center in 2016, an internal investigation by USC determined that his behavior during pelvic exams was outside the scope of current medical practice and amounted to sexual harassment of students.
Even so, USC allowed Tyndall to resign with a financial payout in mid-2017 without informing his patients or immediately reporting him to the Medical Board of California. USC is now facing about 15 lawsuits both in federal court and in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
