E. coli Outbreak Linked to Yogurt from PCC Community Markets

In May 2021, the Washington State Department of Health linked an E. coli outbreak to PCC Community Markets Organic Grass-Fed Yogurt.

The yogurt was quickly recalled by Pure Éire Dairy in Othello, Washington, due to contamination with E. coli O157:H7.

How Many Children Got Sick?

Children were particularly hard-hit in this outbreak — out of 11 confirmed cases, 6 patients were children under 10 years old. One of the patients was a 1-year-old child.

Furthermore, 7 patients were hospitalized, including 3 who developed a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) that may occur in severe E. coli infections.

The case count by county in Washington state is as follows: Benton (1), King (8), Snohomish (1) and Walla Walla (1).

All of the patients were infected with E. coli O157:H7 strains that were genetically linked, suggesting a common source of infection.
