FDA: Class 1 Recall for Philips Trilogy EVO Ventilators
In January 2022, Philips Respironics and the FDA announced a Class 1 recall for hundreds of Philips Trilogy EVO Ventilators due to serious health risks from toxic PE-PUR foam.
What Are Philips Trilogy EVO Ventilators?
Philips Trilogy EVO Ventilators are portable breathing machines that are also called “hospital-to-home” ventilators because they can be used at hospitals, homes, wheelchairs, or personal vehicles. They provide continuous or intermittent positive pressure ventilation for the care of pediatric through adult patients weighing at least 2.5 kg
What is the Problem?
A supplier incorrectly used toxic foam — called polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) — in the muffler assembly for certain Philips Trilogy EVO ventilators and repair kits.
The sound-abatement foam is used to reduce noise and vibrations. Unfortunately, PE-PUR foam can disintegrate into tiny pieces of foam that a user could breathe. PE-PUR foam can also “off-gas” toxic chemicals.
What Trilogy EVO Ventilators Were Recalled?
The recall involves Philips Trilogy EVO ventilators with Material Numbers DS2110X11B (USA) and KR2110X15B (Korea).
Philips is also recalling certain repair kits with Part #1135257 and Lots between 210414 and 210524. They were distributed in the U.S. from April 15, 2021 through May 24, 2021.
How Many People Were Injured?
The recalled Trilogy EVO ventilator have not been linked to any reported injuries or death, but the FDA has issued warnings about health risks from PE-PUR foam, including:
- Toxic or cancer-causing effects to organs, such as kidneys or liver
- Asthma
- Headache
- Inflammatory response
- Irritation to the skin, eyes, nose, skin, and airways
- Dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reaction, such as an allergic reaction or another immune system reaction
- Nausea or vomiting
Other Health Problems Reported to FDA
Since April 2021, the FDA has received over 3,000 injury reports related to foam breakdown (degradation) in Philips breathing machines. The events include cancer, pneumonia, asthma, other respiratory problems, infection, headache, cough, dyspnea (difficulty breathing), dizziness, nodules, and chest pain.
