DreamStation 2 CPAP Machines Linked to Fire Hazard
In November 2023, the FDA issued a Safety Communication about a fire hazard with the Philips DreamStation 2 CPAP Machine, which is a device that is used for sleep apnea.
How Many Fires Were Reported?
According to the FDA, there were around 300 reports of the Philips DreamStation 2 machines overheating. The reports included fires, smoking, and burn injuries involving people who were using the device. Most of these reports were submitted after August 2023.
What is the Problem?
Philips and the FDA are investigating the root cause of the DreamStation 2 fires and overheating: “This is a developing situation … the thermal issues may be related to an electrical and/or a mechanical malfunction of the machine, which may cause it to overheat in certain situations.”
Replacement CPAP Machines May Pose Fire Hazard
Some of the DreamStation 2 CPAP Machines were provided as replacements to patients whose CPAP machine was recalled in June 2021 due to problems with toxic foam and off-gassing.
Signs of Overheating & Fire Hazards
Unplug the CPAP machine and do not use it if:
- you smell burning, smoke, or any unusual odors,
- there is a change in the appearance of the CPAP machine,
- there are unexplained changes to the CPAP machine’s performance,
- water is spilled into the CPAP machine,
- you hear unusual sounds coming from the CPAP machine.
What Should I Do?
- place the CPAP machine on a firm, flat surface
- keep the CPAP away from carpet, fabric, or other flammable materials
- carefully clean the CPAP machine
- empty the CPAP machine’s water reservoir
- let the CPAP machine’s heater plate and water tank cool for approximately 15 minutes before removing the tank to reduce the risk of burns. You could be burned if you touch the heater plate, come in contact with the heated water, or touch the humidifier water tank pan.
Check Your CPAP Machine Before Falling Asleep
Inspect and examine the CPAP machine before and after each use for unusual smells or changes in its appearance. Some problems may only be noticeable when the machine is running, so pay attention to any differences in the CPAP machine as you prepare for bed, before you fall asleep.
CPAP Machine Lawsuits Filed Against Philips
Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Philips after a massive recall in June 2021 for millions of breathing machines that contain toxic sound-abatement foam.
These lawsuits claim that Philips knew about the toxic foam problem, but did not issue a recall until after they finished developing the DreamStation 2 CPAP Machines.
Hundreds of deaths and more than 100,000 reports of injuries have been linked to the recalled devices, including cancer, pneumonia, asthma, respiratory problems, trouble breathing, and even death.
What is the DreamStation 2?
The DreamStation 2 Auto CPAP Machine is a medical device that is used to treat sleep-related breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea. Philips Respironics began selling it in April 2021, shortly after Philips issued a massive recall for the DreamStation 1.
What is a CPAP Machine?
The DreamStation 2 is a medical device called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Machine, which uses mild air pressure to keep breathing airways open while a person sleeps. The DreamStation 2 also includes a humidifier to provide moistened, warm, pressurized air to patients.
