Overview

Acute interstitial nephritis causes sudden inflammation in the kidneys and swelling of tissues between tubules in the kidneys.

What Causes Acute Interstitial Nephritis?

Almost all cases are caused by hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions to medications in the blood, and over 100 medications may be responsible. Anti-heartburn drugs in the Proton-Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class — which includes Prevacid — are the most common cause.

Case Reports Linking Prevacid and Nephritis

The first case reports linking PPIs and acute interstitial nephritis were published in 1992, but the label on Prevacid was not updated until December 2014.

Studies Linking PPIs and Nephritis

After the label was updated, several studies found more evidence linking Prevacid and nephritis. In one study in Canada, older adults were 3X more likely to develop nephritis after using PPIs for a year.

In another study, twice-daily users of PPIs were 50% more likely to develop Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Both of these conditions can cause kidney failure.

Symptoms of Nephritis

The symptoms of nephritis can appear after taking Prevacid for just a few days. It is common for early symptoms to be mistaken for other illnesses. Unfortunately, the longer a patient continues taking Prevacid, the higher the risk of kidney failure.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Patients should seek medical attention if they develop symptoms, such as:

  • Kidney enlargement
  • Pain
  • Urine is bloody or cloudy
  • Very frequent or infrequent urination
  • Tiredness
  • Skin rash
  • Swelling due to fluid retention
  • Confusion

Outlook for Patients

Most patients with nephritis who stop taking Prevacid will recover near-normal kidney function within a few months. However, researchers warn that “permanent impairment of renal function is rather common in the disease,” and some patients require long-term dialysis or a kidney transplant.
