Prevacid and Stomach Cancer
In November 2017, a study published in the journal Gut found a doubled (2X) higher risk of stomach cancer for people who were on long-term treatment with heartburn medications in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class, which includes popular antacids like Prevacid.
Heartburn Drugs Increase Risk of Death
July 2017 — Researchers have linked the use of PPI heartburn drugs with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. The researchers estimated 1 excess death per 500 people who take a PPI. Click here to read more.

Prevacid and Kidney Disease
The active ingredient in Prevacid is lansoprazole, a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) that prevents heartburn and acid reflux by decreasing the amount of acid made by the stomach.
The label on Prevacid was updated to include acute interstitial nephritis in December 2014. Nephritis causes sudden inflammation and swelling in the kidneys due to a hypersensitivity (allergic) reaction to Prevacid.
The first cases of nephritis were linked to Prevacid in a study published in 2004. Of the two case reports, one victim was hospitalized after taking Prevacid for 45 days. She was diagnosed with nephritis after having a biopsy. She recovered after discontinuing Prevacid and taking corticosteroids.
In January 2016, researchers published a study linking the daily use of PPIs with a 20-50% increased risk of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The highest risk was associated with twice-daily doses. In many cases, people with kidney disease require dialysis to treat kidney failure.
What is the problem?
The Schmidt Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our lawyers are not filing a Prevacid class action at this time. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits and only accepting cases involving severe injuries, such as:
- Acute Interstitial Nephritis
- Kidney inflammation
- Kidney damage
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- End-stage renal failure
- Kidney failure
- Stomach cancer
About Class Actions
When a large group of people are seeking refunds or reimbursement, a class action is ideal. Members join together and collectively seek compensation. Any payout is divided equally among everyone in the lawsuit.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Class actions are designed to maximize efficiency — not compensation for individual plaintiffs with the most severe injuries. Another problem is that members may have to accept “low-ball” settlements or massive attorneys’ fees.
Pharmaceutical companies that fail to warn about side effects can be held liable for their actions. Our lawyers help people who were injured by dangerous medications seek financial compensation and justice for their injury, medical expenses, and more.
