Ready Pac Bistro Caesar Salad Linked to E. Coli Outbreak

Ready Pac Bistro Caesar Salad Linked to E. Coli Outbreak

November 21, 2019 — An outbreak of E. coli has been linked to Ready Pac Bistro® Chicken Caesar Salad purchased from Sam’s Club stores in Maryland.

The FDA is warning consumers not to eat Ready Pac Bistro® Chicken Caesar Salad, lot #255406963, UPC 0 77745 27249 8, and a “Best By” date of October 31, 2019.

Because the “Best-By” date is nearly three weeks ago, the product is not likely to be in stores.

The recall was issued after an unopened product from a sick person’s home in Maryland tested positive for E. coli O157. The tests detected E. coli in the romaine lettuce.

At least 17 people in 8 states have been infected with E. coli, according to the CDC outbreak investigation, but only 2 sick people in Maryland reported eating Ready Pac Bistro® Chicken Caesar Salad from Sam’s Club.

Therefore, exposure to this product alone does not fully explain the outbreak. Health officials are tracing back the supply of the romaine lettuce to farms in California.

Illnesses have been reported in Arizona (1), California (2), Colorado (1), Idaho (3), Maryland (2), Montana (1), Washington (1) and Wisconsin (6). Seven people have been hospitalized.

The patients reported that illnesses started on dates ranging from September 24, 2019 through November 8, 2019.

People who are infected with E. coli may start to notice symptoms anywhere from a few days after eating contaminated food or as much as 9 days later. The symptoms generally include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.
