October 20, 2014 — The FDA has announced a recall for Saba Shark Cartilage Complex because one lot tested positive for Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause severe infections.
Saba Shark Cartilage Complex was sold on www.sabaforlife.com from February through August 2014. It is marketed as a natural dietary supplement for muscle, joint, and overall health.
The recalled products were sold in a black screw-top 60-count bottle of 500-mg pills. The bottle is marked with “Saba” in red letters and “Shark Cartilage Complex” in white letters. Lot Number 416349 and products with an expiration date of 08/16 are subject to recall.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. If illness occurs, symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Life-threatening Salmonella infections are more likely in children, the elderly, and people with a weakened immune system.
The FDA warns:
“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
This is not the first time Saba supplements have been linked to safety concerns. In August, Gastroenterology published a case report of a 35 year-old woman who developed liver damage and needed a transplant after taking just three pills of Saba ACE (Appetite Control and Energy). Researchers warned that the “all-natural” supplement actually contained several hepatotoxic ingredients.
