January 7, 2013 — Nephros and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced a Class 1 recall for the SafeSpout and SafeShower water filters. The products have been linked to at least one infection and one death.
The SafeSpout is installed on a standard sink faucet, and the SafeShower is used on shower heads. They remove harmful viruses and bacteria from drinking water. However, they are not complete water treatment systems.
The problem is that the fiber filter can break, which may allow infection-causing microbes to contaminate water. The sealing compound that holds the fiber in place can also break down. Nephros has received at least 29 complaints from customers who found high bacterial counts. Those problems may have been caused by a defective filter.
Although the products are non-medical, the FDA warned that Nephros promoted the water filters as medical devices. When Nephros informed their customers about the recall in October, they recommended discarding all related promotional materials.
Nephros is recalling all lots of SafeShower and SafeSpout that were distributed from October 2011 until September 2013.
