Velvet Ice Cream Recalls All Products for Listeria Risk
On April 26, 2021, The Velvet Ice Cream Company recalled nearly 100 different types of ice cream and sherbet due to a risk of Listeria bacteria contamination.
The recalled brand-names include Velvet®, Buehler’s®, Discount Drug Mart®, North Star®, Whale of a Pail®, Ruggle’s®, or Super Dip®.
No illnesses were reported, but Listeria has been detected multiple times in the company’s facility in Utica, New York, since 2018.
FDA Finds Listeria Multiple Times in Velvet’s Utica Facility
In May 2019, the FDA sent The Velvet Ice Cream Company a warning letter after 9 swabs tested positive for Listeria during an inspection of the facility in Utica.
Furthermore, the FDA warned that the company’s cleaning and sanitation plans were not adequate. Even more worrisome, FDA inspectors found the same type of Listeria in the manufacturing facility in 2018.
Where Were The Recalled Products Sold?
The Velvet Ice Cream Co. recalled products that were distributed to stores in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia, including drug stores, convenience stores and supermarkets.
The products are packaged in various sizes and containers, such as pints, 56-ounce pails, popsicles, 3-gallon buckets, and more.
