June 20, 2019 — An unnamed 44 year-old cancer patient has filed a sex abuse lawsuit against UCLA and gynecologist Dr. James Heaps.
The woman accuses Heaps of touching her inappropriately during 2 years of medical examinations, according to the Los Angeles Times.
At least 22 women have now come forward with claims that Heaps sexually assaulted them during exams at UCLA.
Last week, he pleaded not guilty to criminal charges involving two patients he treated in 2017 and 2018.
After UCLA investigated the allegations, the university removed Heaps from clinical practice and reported him to law enforcement and the Medical Board of California.
Heaps worked with UCLA for nearly 30 years, treating students and non-students. The university issued a statement condemning sexual abuse as an inexcusable breach of the physician-patient relationship.
“We are deeply sorry that a former UCLA physician violated our policies and standards, our trust and the trust of his patients.
