December 29, 2014 — Bethel Nutritional Consulting, Inc. has issued recalls for SLIM-K and B-Lipo diet pills after laboratory tests by the FDA discovered hidden ingredients with severe, life-threatening side effects.
The recalls include one lot of SLIM-K capsules, which were found to contain sibutramine, desmethylsibutramine, and phenolphthalein.
Phenolphthalein is a laxative that was available over-the-counter for most of the 20th century. It was pulled off the market after studies found evidence of serious health risks, including gastrointestinal disturbances and irregular heartbeat. Long-term use was associated with cancer.
Sibutramine was sold as the prescription appetite-suppressant Meridia until October 2010, when a study found that it increased the risk of cardiovascular events by 19% compared to a placebo.
The FDA also recalled one lot of B-Lipo Capsules, which contained lorcaserin.
Lorcaserin is a new weight-loss drug that is FDA-approved under the brand-name Belviq. Unfortunately, side effects may include difficulty thinking, hallucinations, feelings of intense excitement, blood-sugar changes, and serotonin syndrome — especially when it is combined with other medications that influence serotonin.
The FDA cautions:
“Excessive levels of serotonin can cause symptoms that range from mild (shivering and diarrhea) to severe (muscle stiffness, fever, and seizures). Severe serotonin syndrome can be fatal if not treated.”
