FDA Investigates E. coli Outbreak Linked to Spinach

In November 2021, the FDA and CDC warned the public about an E. coli outbreak linked to spinach. The outbreak was linked to Josie’s Organics Baby Spinach with a “Best By” date of October 23, 2021. It was sold in plastic clamshell containers at stores nationwide. According to the CDC:

“Ten people in this outbreak reported eating spinach in the week before they got sick and six reported Josie’s Organics brand. Investigators are working to determine if additional products may be contaminated.”

How Many People Got Sick?

As of December 3, 2021, at least 14 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 from 9 states, including Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and South Dakota, between October 13 and October 27, 2021, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

Josie’s Organics Spinach Tests Positive for E. coli

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture reported that a sample of Josie’s Organics Baby Spinach from a sick person’s home tested positive for E. coli O157:H7. The product had a “Best-If-Used-By” date of October 23, 2021 and it was sold in a plastic clamshell.

What is E. coli O157:H7?

E. coli O157:H7 is a Shiga-toxin producing strain of bacteria that can cause severe intestinal infections in people. Around 10-15% of people who are infected with this strain develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).

Symptoms of an E. coli Infection

  • Diarrhea (may be bloody)
  • Vomiting
  • Severe stomach cramps
  • Fever
  • Dehydration (dry mouth, dizziness, not peeing much)
