E. coli Outbreak Linked to Spinach

In November 2021, the FDA and CDC warned consumers about an outbreak of E. coli linked to spinach after 14 people in 9 states were infected with E. coli O157:H7. One sick person said they ate Josie’s Organics Baby Spinach, and a sample of the product from the person’s home was positive for E. coli, according to health officials.

Fresh Attitude Baby Spinach Recalled for Salmonella Risk

In November 2020, Vegpro International recalled Fresh Attitude® Baby Spinach in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, and Pennsylvania due to a risk of Salmonella bacteria contamination. No illnesses were reported.

The baby spinach was sold in 5-oz. and 11-oz. plastic clamshell containers with Best-Before dates of December 4th (for the 11-oz. product) and December 4th and 5th (for the 5-oz. product).

Dole Recalls Baby Spinach for Salmonella Risk

In August 2019, Dole recalled certain bags and plastic clamshell boxes of fresh baby spinach after a product tested positive for Salmonella in Michigan.

No illnesses were reported, but Salmonella infections can cause serious food poisoning. The products were distributed in IL, IN, KY, MI, NJ, NY, OH, TN, VA, and WI.

The recall involves the following baby spinach products with Use-By dates of 08-05-2019:

  • 6-oz bags of Dole Baby Spinach (Lot W20308A and UPC code 0-71430-00964-2)
  • 10-oz clamshell containers of Dole Baby Spinach (Lot W203010 and UPC code 0-71430-00016-8).

Sprouts Recalls Frozen Spinach for Listeria Contamination

June 2019 — Sprouts Farmers Market recalled frozen spinach after tests on the finished products were positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning. No illnesses have been reported.

  • Sprouts Frozen Cut Leaf Spinach — 16oz. bag, UPC 87487500982, Lot 19031203A03, USE BY 12/03/21
  • Sprouts Frozen Organic Cut Leaf Spinach — 16oz. bag, UPC 87487500991, Lot 19031203A03, USE BY 12/03/21

The product was distributed to Sprouts Farmers Market locations in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

The recall was issued after random samples of finished products were positive for Listeria. Sprouts Farmers Market has removed all of the recalled frozen spinach from stores. Furthermore, Sprouts is conducting an internal investigation with National Frozen Foods.
