March 8, 2016 — Starbucks has issued a recall for Sausage, Egg and Cheddar breakfast sandwiches sold at 250 stores in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma because they could be contaminated with Listeria.
According to USA Today, a spokeswoman for Starbucks said no illnesses have been reported and no products have tested positive for Listeria.
The company issued he recall “out of an abundance of caution” after a surface in a production facility tested positive for Listeria. The breakfast sandwiches are made by Progressive Gourmet, a company based in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
Listeria was discovered during routine testing inside the facility. It was found on a surface that comes in contact with breakfast sandwiches.
The sandwiches were sold in 6-oz clear plastic bags, marked with “Best By” dates of 07-AUG-2016, and were available for purchase on March 3 and March 4, 2016. No other products or production dates are affected by the recall. They may be heated at the store level for immediate consumption.
According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning, especially for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune system:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
