StrataMR Valve Recall

Medtronic Neurosurgery (Brain Therapies) initiated a Class I recall for StrataMR adjustable valves and shunts on February 22, 2017. The recall involves model numbers 42955, 42965, 45905, 46955, 46960, 46965, and 46970. They were manufactured after October 2015.

Health & Safety Warnings

The company sent an Urgent Field Safety Notice (PDF) to customers, warning that flow-resistance problems on StrataMR valves can result in under-drainage of cerebrospinal fluid when the mechanism is adjusted to the wrong position.

Health risks of the problem include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Coma
  • Death

How Do StrataMR Brain Valves Work?

StrataMR valves control the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid through a tube to the patient’s abdomen, where the fluid is re-absorbed. This reduces high pressure in the skull in patients with hydrocephalus. StrataMR valves are adjusted non-surgically with magnets.

How Many People Were Injured?

Medtronic has received reports of one patient who died, but it is unknown if a malfunctioning StrataMR valve was responsible. The company says the complaint-rate is 2.75% of the total number of units sold, or around 72 complaints out of 2,622 valves sold worldwide.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action lawsuit, but we are not filing a StrataMR valve class action lawsuit against Medtronic. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits for people who were injured.

About Class Actions

Class actions are ideal when a lot of people have very similar legal claims. They are especially useful when each person is seeking a relatively minor payout, like a refund for buying a defective product.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

The problem is that class actions can have disadvantages for individual members who have far more serious injuries than everyone else. These individuals may have to accept a low-ball settlement or higher attorneys’ fees.

Our lawyers specialize in filing individual lawsuits against the manufacturers of defective medical devices. If you were injured by a StrataMR Valve or Shunt System, you may qualify to file a lawsuit and seek compensation for your injuries, medical expenses, and more.
