Recent studies have linked testosterone replacement therapy to a doubled risk of heart attack for men over 65, and a 30% increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.
“That’s equivalent to smoking one to two packs of cigarettes a day, or having sky-high cholesterol,” warns Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, a Cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic.
What is Striant?
Striant is a buccal system for delivering testosterone through mucous membranes in the mouth. Its manufacturer, Columbia Laboratories, designed Striant to adhere to the gum or inner cheek, where it slowly delivers a controlled amount of testosterone. It is used to treat male hypogonadism (low testosterone).
Does Striant Cause Heart Attacks, Stroke, or Death?
Striant increases the risk of blood clots in the legs, also known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), by thickening the blood, increasing the number of red blood cells, and elevating blood pressure. When platelets coagulate into a blood clot, they can obstruct blood vessels to vital organs — especially in men who already have narrow arteries due to aging, heart disease, or other risk-factors.
FDA Adds Heart Attack, Stroke Warnings to Testosterone Products
March 3, 2015 — In a Safety Communication, the FDA is asking manufacturers of testosterone replacement products to stop marketing them for the treatment of age-related “Low T,” add warnings about heart attacks and strokes, and start studying the long-term risks. Click here to read more.
FDA Safety Communication
In early 2014, several alarming studies linking testosterone and heart attack prompted the FDA to issue a Drug Safety Communication and investigate the heart risks of testosterone.
Dr. Steve Nissen, Chief Cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, warned that the long-term risks of testosterone are unknown. This is concerning because testosterone replacement therapy is a lifetime commitment. According to Dr. Nissen:
“What’s going on is a giant experiment with American men’s health at stake, because we don’t have the long-term data on the safety of these products.”
