Systane Eye Drops Recalled for Eye Infection Risk
In December 2024, Alcon Laboratories recalled one lot of Systane Eye Drops due to fungal contamination and a risk of eye infections.
What is the Problem?
Systane Eye Drops were recalled after Alcon Laboratories evaluated a “consumer complaint of foreign material observed inside a sealed single use vial and determined the material to be fungal in nature,” according to the recall.
Fungal Contamination in Eye Drops
Eye drops are supposed to be sterile, which is essential to reduce the risk of eye infections. Eye drops are potentially high-risk medications because they “bypass some of the body’s natural defenses,” according to the FDA.
How To Identify Recalled Eye Drops
The recall involves one lot of Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF, Single Vials On-the-Go, 25 count (Lot 10101).
These eye drops are used for the temporary relief of eye irritation and burning in people who are suffering from dry eye symptoms.
Systane Eye Drops are packaged in a cardboard carton containing 25 sterile, single-use plastic vials of preservative-free liquid eye drops. The carton has a green and pink design, with “Systane” and “ULTRA PF” brand-names on the front of the carton and a size of “25 vials.”
You can identify the eye drops with the following information:
- Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF
- NDC 0065-1432-06
- UPC 300651432060
- Lot Number 10101
- Expiration Date 2025/09
What is the Risk?
Fungal eye infections are rare, but they can be serious. These infections are called “keratitis” (infection of the front part of the eye) or “endophthalmitis” (fungal infection inside the eye).
The symptoms of a fungal eye infection may include:
- Eye pain
- Eye redness
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Excessive tearing
- Eye discharge
