What Happened?

In June 2026, Target announced a voluntary recall for certain batches of its store-brand Up & Up® Fragrance Free and Up & Up® Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes.

The recall was issued after the manufacturer received customer complaints about the wipes being discolored.

The FDA tested samples of the wipes and identified two types of bacteria: Burkholderia cepacia complex (also known as B. cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli).

What is the Risk?

Both of these types of bacteria are capable of causing serious infections, especially in newborns, infants, and young children. The risk of bacteria entering the infant’s body and causing serious complications is also increased if they have broken skin on their diaper area, such as diaper rash or irritated skin.

What is the Problem?

The bacteria found in the wipes is unlikely to pose a serious risk to most healthy adults. Even if they have minor skin lesions, they could develop a local infection, but more serious complications would be uncommon.

However, in immunocompromised people, newborns, infants, and young children, the infection is more likely to spread into the bloodstream. This could potentially lead to sepsis, pneumonia, hospitalization, or even life-threartening complications.

According to the FDA warning:

“Use of products contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli may result in serious and life-threatening infections. The products are predominantly used on newborns, infants, and young children, who are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infection due to their immature immune systems.”

How Many People Were Affected?

Target and the manufacturer of the wipes, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, did not specify how many copmlaints they received, only saying there were “a number of consumer complaints and adverse event reports alleging product discoloration and symptoms such as skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections potentially associated with the use of the product.”

Types of Complaints Linked to Recalled Baby Wipes

  • Skin irritation
