March 27, 2015 — Frozen organic spinach sold at Target stores nationwide has been recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria.
The recall was issued by Superior Foods, Inc., a California-based company that supplies Target stores with Simply Balanced Organic Chopped Spinach in 10-oz steamer bags.
The company has not received any reports of food poisoning. The voluntary recall was issued “out of an abundance of caution” after the company was notified about possible Listeria contamination by a supplier.
Last week, Coastal Green Vegetable Company issued a recall for frozen spinach after a microbiology report found Listeria in products that were already shipped out.
Coastal Greens is based in Oxnard, California and describes itself as a “small processor” of frozen spinach. However, the recalls quickly expanded to include about 30 products sold by Amy’s Kitchen, La Terra Fina (Costco, Smart & Final), Twin City Foods (Wegmans, Meijer), and Superior Foods (Target).
Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria commonly found in soil and water. Although outbreaks of listeriosis are rare, they tend to be very serious — especially for young children, older adults, or people with weakened immune systems.
The FDA warned about the following health risks:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
