Lawsuits Filed After Deadly Acid Leak at LyondellBasell Chemical Plant
In July 2021, multiple lawsuits were filed after a deadly acid leak at the LyondellBasell chemical plant near La Porte, Texas.
LyondellBasell is accused of “gross negligence” for choosing to wait to repair a leak of acetic acid when it was discovered on July 27, 2021.
Later that day, at around 7:35 p.m., around 100,000 pounds of acetic acid mixed with other toxic chemicals blew out of a broken cap on a pressurized line. The vapor cloud of acid chemicals caused the deaths of two men at the scene. Dozens of other workers were hospitalized with breathing problems, burns, or knee and back injuries as they fled.
Chemical Plant Explosion Near Port Neches, Texas
In November 2019, a massive chemical plant explosion near Port Neches, Texas, injured 3 workers and forced 60,000 people to evacuate their homes on the day before Thanksgiving. The explosion damaged many homes, shattering windows and doors, and spewed toxic chemicals into the air as black smoke billowed into the air for hours.
Worker Dies After Explosion at KMCO Plant in Crosby, Texas
In April 2019, a man working at the KMCO chemical plant in Crosby, Texas died in a massive explosion involving a highly-flammable gas called isobutylene. James Earl “Bubba” Mangum, age 27, died in the explosion. Two men were hospitalized with critical injuries and severe burns. Another 30 workers were injured, according to investigators.
30 Workers Treated for Injuries After Fire at Exxon Mobil Refinery in Baytown, Texas
In July 2019, at least 66 people were treated for injuries after a fire and explosion at the Exxon Mobil chemical plant in Baytown, about 25 miles east of Houston, Texas. The explosion involved ethylene, a highly-flammable chemical.
