Chemical Plant Explosion & Fire in Shepherd, Texas

On November 8, 2023, a fire was reported at the Sound Chemical Solutions plant in Shepherd, Texas at around 8:17 a.m.

What Happened?

Local officials said that an employee using a forklift noticed that a container was leaking chemicals. When he used the forklift to lift the container, a fire broke out and rapidly spread within the facility.

The facility stores a variety of highly-flammable, toxic chemicals on site. Witnesses also reported that the facility has a 1,000-gallon propane tank and a 4-inch natural gas main underground.

How Many People Were Injured?

One worker suffered minor burn injuries, including 2nd-degree burns to his arm and 1st-degree burns to his face. The explosion sent a massive cloud of billowing black smoke into the air, forcing residents and children at a nearby school to shelter in place.

What is Sound Chemical Solutions?

The Sound Chemical Solutions facility is located in Shepherd, Texas, about 1 hour north of Houston. The facility manufactures solvents, which are highly-flammable chemicals used in paint thinners and glue.

What Chemicals Were At the Facility?

The facility stored Wood Turpentine, Phosphoric Acid 75%, Xylene, Diesel Fuel, IMP-IC-2012, Sulfuric Acid, CDA-121, CCI-1001-Imidazoline, NP 9, Isopropyl Alcohol, IMB-BAC-2, AZA-121 Dispersant, and Acetic Acid, according to local officials.

People who are exposed to these chemicals may suffer from short-term and long-term health problems.

The toxic chemicals are “known to have acute toxicity, carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity, and may cause serious eye damage or eye irritation, skin corrosion or irritation, aspiration hazard, and organ toxicity,” according to a news release from the Polk County Office of Emergency Management.
