What Are Cataract Lenses?
Intraocular Lens Implants (IOLs) are lenses that are surgically implanted in the eye of people who have surgery to treat cataracts, which is a common eye problem that causes vision loss due to thickening and clouding of the eye lens.
Cataracts is commonly treated with surgery to remove the person’s natural eye lens and replace it with an artificial lens.
For people with astigmatism, there is a lens called a toric lens that is specifically designed to correct that problem. One of the newest devices on the market for this is the Trulign Toric Intraocular Lens.
Crystalens and Trulign Cataract Lenses
Bausch & Lomb manufactures two types of artificial lenses for patients who have had cataracts surgery. The original version, Crystalens, and a newer version called Trulign Toric Intraocular Lenses.
Unlike other IOLs, the Trulign Toric lens contains a hinge, which provides certain advantages but also increases the risk that it will get stuck in the incorrect position. If the lens gets stuck at an angle, patients may need to have another surgery to remove the lens.
Trulign Cataract Lens Eye Injury Lawsuit
In July 2023, the Connecticut Supreme Court allowed a Trulign cataract lens eye injury lawsuit to move forward against Bausch & Lomb.
The lawsuit was filed by a woman who was implanted with Trulign Toric lenses in both eyes following cataracts surgery.
Unfortunately, the lenses twisted and caused a painful complication called “Z Syndrome,” which caused her to suffer from severe eye pain, and vision loss.
She had multiple surgeries to try to fix the problems, but all were unsuccessful. She now suffers from permanent impairment in both eyes, according to her lawsuit.
She claims that Bausch & Lomb knew about numerous reports of Z Syndrome in patients who had been implanted with Trulign lenses, but failed to report all of the cases to the FDA.
Her lawsuit also claims that Trulign lenses have a higher risk of causing Z Syndrome and other severe eye injuries compared to the earlier version of the lenses, called Crystalens.
Her Trulign Cataract Lens Lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut — Case Number 3:18-cv-00352.
What is Z Syndrome?
Z Syndrome occurs when cataract lenses twist or tilt, resulting in part of the lens moving forward toward the surface of the eye, and another part of the lens moving backward or staying in place.
Symptoms of Z Syndrome
- Eye pain
- Vision loss
- Myopia (near-sightedness)<l/i>
- Astigmatism (distorted vision)
- Blurry vision
- Blindness
- Need for additional surgery
Long-Term Outlook for People With Z Syndrome
The symptoms of Z Syndrome often appear 3 to 5 weeks after cataract surgery, so it is important to recognize the signs early, before the condition progresses to vision loss.
Unfortunately, there are limited treatment options when Z Syndrome occurs in patients with the Crystalens and Trulign lenses, especially after a few months once they become fixed in place by scar-tissue.
