UPDATE: Tuna Steaks Recalled in Northern California After Consumer Complaint
In December 2021, Relish Foods Inc. recalled 10-oz frozen tuna steaks due to a risk of scombroid fish poisoning. The recall was issued after a consumer complaint prompted the FDA to test the product, which found high levels of histamines. The tuna steaks were distributed in Northern California at Save Mart Supermarkets and Lucky Stores from October 6th, 2021 potentially up to December 27th, 2021. Click here to read more.
Tuna Recalled in Texas for Scombroid Fish Poisoning Risk
In October 2019, Mical Seafood Inc. expanded a recall for a variety of tuna items after at least 4 people suffered scombroid fish poisoning.
The expanded recall includes Tuna Loins, Tuna Poke, Tuna Steaks, Tuna Ground Meat, and Tuna Saku (products of Vietnam) with production dates between 04/01/2019 and 05/31/2019.
The expanded recall includes tuna products that were wholesaled to customers in the following 23 states: AL, CA, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NV, NY, PA, RI, TX, UT, VA and WI.
Mical Seafood’s original recall on October 1 involved frozen, wild-caught, yellowfin tuna poke cubes, tuna loins, tuna ground meat, and 6-ounce tuna steaks. The original recall involves production dates between 04/02/2019 and 05/14/2019. Click here to read more.
What is Scombroid Fish Poisoning?
Scombroid fish poisoning is an allergic reaction that occurs when people eat certain species of fish that were not refrigerated properly. It is caused by elevated levels of histamine in the fish.
Signs of Scombroid Fish Poisoning
Scombroid fish poisoning causes symptoms within a few minutes or hours of eating contaminated fish. The symptoms usually resolve on their own within a few hours without requiring medical treatment.
The symptoms of scombroid fish poisoning can include:
- Tingling or burning sensation in the mouth
- Facial swelling
- Rash
- Hives and itchy skin
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
