UPDATE: Rape Victim Files Lawsuit Against Uber

In July 2020, a woman who says she was raped by her Uber driver in 2018 filed a sexual assault lawsuit against the ride-sharing company. Her attacker, Frederick Q. Amfo, was in the U.S. illegally and mistakenly released from prison. Within 24 hours, he boarded a plane and fled to his home country of Ghana.

What’s the Problem?

In April 2018, CNN reported that at least 103 Uber drivers were arrested for sexual assault, convicted, named in lawsuits, or are still wanted by police. Unfortunately, CNN’s statistics vastly underestimated the scope of Uber’s ongoing problem with sexual predators. In many cases, these drivers target intoxicated women who are alone.

Uber Reports 6,000 Sexual Assaults in Two Years

In December 2019, Uber voluntarily released a Safety Report with detailed statistics on reports of sexual assaults by Uber drivers and passengers in the U.S. in 2017 and 2018. During this time, 5,981 sexual assaults were reported.

The most serious sexual assaults were 235 reports of rape in 2018, plus 229 reports of rape in 2017 — for an average of 4 rapes a week.

There were also nearly 600 reports of attempted rape, nearly 3,000 reports of groping, and nearly 2,000 reports of unwanted kissing by Uber drivers or passengers during this two-year period in the U.S.

Uber’s Ongoing Problem of Rapist Drivers

In recent years, it has become a regular occurrence to see reports of rape involving Uber drivers who targeted intoxicated women. For example, in November 2019, an Uber driver from Tulsa was charged with raping and sodomizing an intoxicated female passenger. Just days later, a jury in Los Angeles convicted an Uber driver from North Hollywood of raping his intoxicated 24 year-old passenger.

Uber Sex Assault Lawsuits

Dozens of sex assault lawsuits have been filed against Uber all over the nation. These lawsuits accuse Uber of falsely advertising their service as a “Safe Ride Home” for women, when in reality, thousands of rides have ended in tragedy when women were sexually abused.

Uber Updates App Safety Features & Background Checks

Uber has added new safety featured to the app, including a “Panic Button” for users to call 911 in an emergency. Passengers can also choose to audio record their rides.

Uber has also enhanced background checks for drivers with an automated system that screens for criminal history and driving records. Since 2019, Uber has banned over 40,000 drivers who failed the new background check system.

Has Uber Paid Lawsuit Settlements?

Yes. Uber recently ended its policy of mandatory arbitration for sex assault lawsuits. That means lawsuits could potentially go to trial and end in massive jury verdicts. Instead, in many cases, Uber pays settlements to victims out-of-court for undisclosed sums of money rather than let the cases go to trial.
