UPPAbaby Strollers Recalled for Finger Amputation Risk

In September 2022, UPPAbaby recalled about 14,400 UPPAbaby All-Terrain RIDGE Strollers after a child’s fingertip was amputated in the brakes.

What is the Problem?

UPPAbaby recalled the RIDGE jogging strollers because the “rear disc brakes have openings that can cause amputation or laceration if a non-occupant child’s fingertip gets caught in the openings while the stroller is in use,” according to the recall notice.

Amputation Risk to Child on a Ride-Along Board Accessory

The “non-occupant child” could be using a ride-along board accessory that is attached between the wheels. UPPAbaby RIDGE is one of the only jogging strollers that can be paired with a ride-along board. If this other child touches the brakes, they could suffer a finger amputation.

Was My UPPAbaby Stroller Recalled?

UPPAbaby is asking consumers who own an UPPAbaby All-Terrain RIDGE Jogging Stroller manufactured between October 2021 and August 2022 to stop using it and contact the company to receive free replacement disc brakes for both wheels.

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled strollers were sold at BuyBuyBaby, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn Kids and other children’s stores and specialty stores nationwide and online at Amazon from October 2021 through August 2022 for about $600.

Other UPPAbaby Stroller Recalls

In June 2021, UPPAbaby recalled 86,000 adaptors for Rumbleseats because they can detach from the stroller, posing a fall hazard to the child. There were 135 reports of detachments, including 77 incidents resulting in bumps, scrapes, and 2 broken noses.

In July 2015, UPPAbaby also recalled about 71,000 strollers (Cruz, Vista, and RumbleSeat) after 22 reports of “children biting off a piece of the bumper bar foam,” which poses a choking hazard.

Finger Amputation Risks of Strollers

Finger amputations are a well-known problem with strollers — especially fold-up strollers, which are designed with hinges on each side of the seat. A child can suffer a finger amputation or severe lacerations if the hinges are not fully locked, or starts to collapse.

Long-Term Risks of Finger Amputations in Children

    • Self-esteem issues due to appearance
    • Problems learning to write or use a pencil
    • “Hook nail” deformity
    • Cold intolerance
    • Chronic pain
    • Skin tenderness
    • Persistent numbness or hypersensitivity
    • Scarring
    • Chronic ulceration or infections
    • Loss of flexibility due to scar-tissue
    • Nerve damage
