Valsartan Recalled for Toxic Cancer-Causing Impurity
In July 2018, the FDA announced a recall of several valsartan medications because they contain a toxic impurity that is believed to cause cancer in people.
What is the Problem?
The valsartan medications were recalled due to an impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer in people).
Not all valsartan medications were recalled. The recall only involves valsartan medications supplied by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals of Linhai, China. The company found NDMA and believes the problem started in 2012, after they changed manufacturing processes.
