Verizon Recalls 2.5 Million Hotspots for Fire & Burn Hazard
April 8, 2021 — Verizon has recalled about 2.5 million mobile hotspot devices because the lithium-ion batteries can overheat and catch on fire, or cause burn injuries.
What is the Problem?
Verizon recalled the hotspot devices after 15 reports of the lithium-ion batteries in the devices overheating, including 6 reports of fires that damaged bedding or flooring, and 2 people who suffered burn injuries.
What Hotspots Were Recalled?
The recall involves Ellipsis Jetpack Mobile Hotspot devices (MHS900L, MHS900LS and MHS900LPP).
They were imported by Franklin Wireless Corp. The charger provided with the hotspots has a sticker on the wire stating: “Compatible: FWC MHS900L, Model: FWCR900TVL, DC151030.”
The recalled hotspots were sold nationwide at Verizon stores, other stores, school districts (which may have provided the hotspots to students to enable remote learning), and www.verizon.com from April 2017 to March 2021 for $50 to $150.
