UPDATE: Ground Beef Recalled from Walmart Stores in 7 States
In January 2022, Interstate Meat Dist. Inc. recalled approximately 28,356 pounds of raw ground beef items that were distributed to Walmart and other stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming after a package tested positive for E. coli. The recall involves the following products from Walmart:
- Wal-Mart, ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF 90% LEAN 10% FAT, 16 oz. (1 lb.) chub, 18:49 through 19:18 L3, 1/11/2022
- Wal-Mart, ALL NATURAL LEAN GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN 7% FAT, 16 oz. (1 lb.) chub, 21:15 through 22:42 L3, 1/11/2022
- Wal-Mart, ALL NATURAL LEAN GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN 7% FAT, 48 oz. (3 lb.) chub, 18:15 through 21:18 L1, 1/11/2022
- Wal-Mart, ALL NATURAL LEAN GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN 7% FAT, 48 oz. (3 lb.) chub, 21:00 through 22:19 L2, 1/11/2022
Walmart Recalls Ground Beef for E. coli Risk
In June 2020, Lakeside Refrigerated Services issued a recall for approximately 42,922 pounds of ground beef after a routine test was positive for E. coli O157:H7, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service.
No illnesses were reported. The recalled ground beef was shipped nationwide at Walmart and other stores. The products were produced on June 1, 2020 and labeled with establishment number “EST. 46941” in the USDA mark of inspection.
The recall involves the following ground beef items:
- 1-lb. vacuum packages containing “Marketside Butcher Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef” and a use or freeze by date of July 1, 2020 and lot code P-53298-82.
- 1-lb. vacuum packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces of “Marketside Butcher Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef Patties” and a use or freeze by date of June 27, 2020 and lot code P-53934-28.
- 3-lb. vacuum packages containing three 1 lb. pieces of “Marketside Butcher Organic Grass-Fed Ground Beef 93% Lean / 7% Fat” and a use or freeze by date of July 1, 2020 and lot code P53929-70.
- 1-lb. tray packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces of “Thomas Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef Patties 85% Lean / 15% FAT” and a use or freeze by date of June 25, 2020 and lot code P53944-10.
- 4-lb. tray packages containing 10 ¼ lb. pieces of “Thomas Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef Patties 80% Lean / 20% Fat” and a use or freeze by date of June 25, 2020 and lot code P53937-45.
- 1-lb. vacuum packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces of “Thomas Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef Patties 85% Lean / 15% Fat” and a use or freeze by date of June 27, 2020 and lot code P53935-25.
- 1-lb. vacuum packages containing “Value Pack Fresh Ground Beef 76% Lean / 24% Fat” and a use or freeze by date of July 1, 2020 and lot code P53930-18.
What is the Risk?
Infections with E. coli can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Most healthy adults recover from E. coli within a week without needing medical treatment. However, E. coli infections can develop into a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
