May 27, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced two recalls for walnuts that may be contaminated with Listeria, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.
The FDA warns that Listeria monocytogenes causes severe and sometimes deadly infections, especially for young children, people with weak immune systems, and the elderly:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
The first recall was issued on May 21 for walnuts produced by Sherman Produce of St. Louis, Missouri. The recall affects 241 cases of bulk walnuts packaged in 25-pound bulk cardboard boxes that were sold in Missouri and Illinois. It also includes Schnucks brand 10-ounce trays with UPC 00338390032 with best by dates 03/15 and 04/15. All walnuts produced by Sherman Produce during this time are being recalled. No illnesses have been reported.
The second recall was issued on May 23 by Belleville Farmer’s Market of Belleville, Illinois. Routine testing discovered Listeria monocytogenes on Shelled Walnuts. The products are packaged in an 8-ounce, clear container marketed with packing dates between March and May 2014. No illnesses have been reported.

- Fever (above 100.4ºF)
- Muscle aches or pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
