FDA Issues Class 1 Recall for Walnut Thermometers
In June 2023, the FDA upgraded the warning for Walnut Thermometers to a Class 1 recall. This is the most urgent type of recall, reserved for medical devices that can cause severe injuries or death.
The manufacturer, BearCare Inc., reported 5 complaints related to the recall. The reports include:
“Skin burns and irritation resulting from use of the device. … Potential overheating and leakage of corrosive chemicals from the device could cause skin irritation, burns, other serious injuries, or death.”
The recall involves rechargeable Walnut Wearable Smart Thermometers (Model Number WT20 and Lot Number 20221115W002). Nearly 1,000 units were distributed in the U.S. between December 1, 2022 and April 1, 2023.
BearCare Recalls Walnut Thermometers After Burns Reported
In May 2023, BearCare recalled thousands of Walnut Thermometers after reports of minor to severe burns and skin irritation. There is also a risk of chemical poisoning to the child and anyone else who handles the device if it is leaking.
What is the Problem?
Caregivers should immediately stop using Walnut Thermometers because children can suffer severe burns and skin irritation. Corrosive chemicals can also leak out of the device, which poses a risk of chemical burns to the skin, eyes, and mouth, and toxicity if the chemicals are swallowed.
What is a Walnut Thermometer?
The recall involves Walnut Wearable Smart Thermometers, which are over-the-counter products that are designed to continuously monitor the chest temperature of infants and children ages 0 to 6 years old.
The device looks like a silicone penguin with an adhesive patch that sticks on the child’s chest. The device uses Bluetooth to send temperature readings to the Walnut Cares App. It also sends alerts when the child spikes a fever or has a sudden temperature drop.
Was My Thermometer Recalled?
Walnut Thermometers can be identified by a silicone exterior that looks like a cartoon penguin. They were funded on Kickstarter and distributed between December 2022 and April 2023. The recalled products have Model Number WT20 and Lot Number 20221115W002.
What is the Risk?
The risk to caretakers and children includes:
- Burns
- Skin irritation
- Exposure to corrosive chemicals
- Chemical poisoning
- Toxicity
- Vision loss or blindness
- Scarring
- And more
Signs Your Walnut Thermometer is Failing
BearCare is warning consumers to take extra caution if there are clear signs that the Walnut Thermometer is failing, such as:
- Any substance leaking from the device’s exterior
- Any corrosion near the smart sensor on the back of the device
- Diminished battery life
- Connectivity issues with the Walnut App
- A sensation of warming or heat at or near the site where the Walnut Thermometer is used on the skin
