Walnut Trail Mix Recall Issued for Food Poisoning Risk

March 30, 2015 — Dozens of trail mix products have been recalled by Aurora Products Inc. because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

This is an expanded recall from one issued by Aurora on March 20, and the fourth major recall for walnuts in the last two weeks. There have been no reports of food poisoning connected to any of the recalls.

The contamination was discovered during routine testing by an outside company contracted by the FDA. One container of a natural walnut product had Salmonella. Organic walnuts are not included in the recall.

Aurora supplied walnuts to more than a dozen private-label products that use store-branded labeling, such as:

  • America Choice
  • Belmont Market
  • Boiceville Market
  • Gaul’s Market
  • Green Hills Market
  • Harvest Co-Op Market
  • Hurley Ridge
  • Lees
  • Miles Market
  • Palmers Market
  • Union Market
  • Walter Stewart
  • Windfall Market
  • Wild Acorns

The recall includes walnuts, trail mixes, mixed salted nuts, cranberry trail mix, raisin nut mix, and more. The nuts were sold in plastic cups, tubs, pouches, and in bulk. They were marked with “best if used by” date ranges between October and December 2015.

Healthy adults who are infected with Salmonella may develop fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain for up to one week. The infection can be life-threatening for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The FDA has also warned about long-term complications:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
