May 2, 2023 — A woman from Georgia who claims that she was severely burned by a defective Instant Pot has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
The woman, Timya R., claims that she was severely burned on March 15, 2021, while using an Instant Pot 6-Quart DUO 60 V3 Electric Pressure Cooker.
The product is advertised as a “multi-use” pressure cooker, with 9-in-1 functionality. For example, one feature is that the “easy-close lid automatically seals when the lid is closed.”
The product is also advertised to have “10+ proven safety features, including Overheat Protection™ and safe locking lid.”
In her lawsuit, the plaintiff alleges that these advertising claims about “safety” are misleading because consumers can easily twist open the lid when there is still pressure inside the pot.
She claims she suffered “substantial burn injuries” when she was able to rotate and open the pressure cooker’s lid, “allowing its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker.”
She accuses Instant Brands Inc., the company that makes the Instant Pot, of selling pressure cookers that are “unreasonably dangerous” and “defectively and negligently designed and manufactured.”
Her Instant Pot Lawsuit was filed on March 10, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Eastern Division) — Case Number 1:23-cv-01502.
