84,000 Woom Bikes Recalled After 19 Kids Injured When Handlebars Detached

In July 2023, the Texas-based bike company Woom Bikes USA recalled about 84,000 bicycles because the handlebars can loosen or detach during use.

What is the Problem?

The recall involves Woom ORIGINAL bikes from model years 2018 through 2021, which have a one-bolt stem clamp design.

If the bolt loosens, the handlebars can loosen or detach during use, causing a child to crash the bike and suffer injuries, which may be life-threatening or deadly. The “risk of injury is more likely to occur when the stem clamp bolt is not sufficiently tightened,” according to Woom.

How Many Kids Were Injured?

Woom said it received 77 reports of the handlebar stem detaching or loosening, which caused 19 children to suffer injuries, such as: bruises, cuts, and scrapes (abrasions).

What Bikes Were Recalled?

The recall only includes woom ORIGINAL bikes (model years 2018 through 2021). The stems on these bikes have one silver bolt to clamp onto the steerer tube. They were sold from September 2018 to March 2022 for between $200 and $530 online and in bike stores nationwide.

They were sold in six versions: woom 1, woom 1 Plus, woom 2, woom 3, woom 4, woom 5 and woom 6.

The woom 1 and woom 1 PLUS are balance bikes. The woom 2 through 6 are pedal bikes.

Other Recalls From Woom Bikes USA

Woom Bikes USA has also recalled other bicycles and helmets due to a risk of severe injuries:

  • Woom model 4, 5, 6 bicycles: In March 2020, Woom Bikes recalled about 5,500 bicycles because the front fork can loosen or detach. No injuries were reported at the time.
  • Woom Children’s Helmets: In August 2020, Woom Bikes recalled about 1,900 bike helmets for kids due to a risk of head injuries. The helmets “do not meet the federal safety standard,” according to the recall.
