Yu Shang Food Recall

In November 2024, the South Carolina-based company Yu Shang Food announced a recall for approximately 72,240 pounds of fully-cooked pork, duck and chicken products that were linked to a deadly outbreak of food poisoning with Listeria.

What Happened?

Yu Shang Food recalled all products that were made before October 2024. The first illnesses were reported in October 2021, but other people may have gotten sick. At least 11 illnesses were confirmed.

How Many People Got Sick?

Yu Shang Food products were linked to 11 illnesses, including 9 people who were hospitalized and 1 baby in California who died. The illnesses were reported in California (7), Illinois (2), New Jersey (1), and New York (1).

The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the official case-count, and may not be limited to the states with known illnesses, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.

Twin Infants Died, Pregnant Mother Infected

The baby in California who died was an infant who had a twin. The other twin also died, but because Listeria was only found in one twin, the CDC did not count the other twin in the case-count. Their mother, who was pregnant, was also infected with Listeria, but survived.
