Britax ClickTight Car Seats Recalled for Harness Problem

Britax ClickTight Car Seats Recalled for Harness Problem

August 14, 2015 — About 200,000 car seats are being recalled by Britax Child Safety Inc. because the shoulder straps might not restrain a child in a car accident.

About 37 models of ClickTight Convertible car seats made from August 1, 2014 through July 29, 2015 are being recalled, including the Advocate, Boulevard, and Marathon.

The seats have a button that releases the shoulder straps so they can be adjusted. If the button gets stuck in the “open” position, the shoulder straps will not tighten or restrain a child, which increases their risk of an injury in a car accident.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The problem was discovered when Britax received complaints, including Facebook posts, according to the Associated Press.

Britax will offer customers a free repair-kit that contains lubricant. It also contains instructions for applying lubricant to the button to prevent it from sticking. According to a statement from the company:

“If a consumer confirms that their harness straps remain securely tensioned, they can continue to use their car seat until their remedy kit arrives. If an owner cannot get the shoulder straps to remain in place, then Britax recommends against using the car seat until the lubricant has been applied.”

This is not the first time concerns have been raised about the car seats. In March, Consumer Reports warned that the safety harnesses were not installed properly. According to investigators, store-bought car seats had a harness loop pulled over the anchor but not fully engaged around the hook. If the hook is not engaged, the harness loop can pull off.
